An Idea Sprouts from a Seed!

August 30, 2008

My radio show guest tonight is a true inspiration.  Seven years ago Canadian operating room nurse, Phyllis Reader stepped way out of her comfort zone by donating her time and nursing skills in a third world country.  Appalled by the lack of medical supplies, Phylis put their need there together with the unfortunate waste of medical supplies here in Canada and created an organization called International Hope Canada.

Phyllis credits the support of her family and wonderful team of volunteers, who have made this cause their passion, for getting tonnes of quality medical products to underdeveloped countries.

How wonderful that items that cannot be used here can help to save lives elsewhere!  From this seed of an idea that she had, a fabulous organization has developed-wow!

What idea do you have that is just about ready to sprout?

Assets not Liabilities

August 28, 2008

I was most honoured to witness one of the most profound speakers of our time, Mr Bill Strickland, Jr.  What he has done is nothing less that amazing.

In a nutshell, he has built a gorgeous, world class facility in the core area of Pittsburgh to educate the cities most impoverished people.  I cannot due justice to his story however the essence of his belief is everyone is born as an asset, not a liability and that if we treat people as such, we can really change the world.

If you need some inspiration and want to hear about the how to ‘Make the Impossible Posssible,’ which is also the title of his book. Check out his book and his video…

Slow Down You Move to Fast

August 22, 2008

I saw a beautiful thing…a sweet looking child of about 4 walking in between her Mom and Dad, her black pony tail flapping back and forth and cute little hands clutching onto each of her parents.

What made me stop to notice was the pace at which they were walking, it was at her pace, the pace a of child with little legs, the pace of people not in a hurry, the pace of people just enjoying the walk.

Sadly, this is rare.  How many times have you seen parents yanking their children behind them, their little legs struggling to catch up.  How many times during the day are we rushing about dragging ourselves around!

This family made me notice the beauty and simplicity of slowing down, and only going as fast as the slowest person, there is definitely a place for that in our world.

Especially in the summer.

Shake it off!

August 21, 2008

Have you heard that expression, shake it off?  Sure lots of times.  If something is bothering you, someone upset you or the  everyday stresses are piling up, sometime we try to just shake it off.  Well who knew that it had a literal meaning?

Tonight I experienced what ‘shake it off’ really means.

I attended a mediation session- my first- and this night was about shaking.  Literally shaking it off.  The meditative guide encouraged us to shake to release the issues in  our tissues!  While this was all quite odd, out there and inhibiting to me- still with more that a dozen other shakers, I shook.  During the 1/2 meditation, going through various stages of shaking with his guidance, I shook my little heart out and hopefully all the heavy issues that went with it.

While I admittedly don’t ‘get’ the whole process, I am open enough to give it a try, you just never know!

Think like an Olympian

August 20, 2008

It’s the talk of the town, we are bearing witness to some of the greatest athletes in history.  Most of their feats seem IMPOSSIBLE, don’t they!

An  Olympic athlete said once,  “To be a great Olympian, you only have to practice twice- when you feel like it and when you don’t.”

Wouldn’t we do well to apply that to other areas of our lives as well:

When to be kind- when your feel like it and when you don’t
When to work hard-when you feel like it and when you don’t
When to take care of yourself-when you feel like it and when you don’t
When to live your priorities-when you feel like it and when you don’t
When to act with  integrity-when you feel like it and when you don’t
When to help-when you feel like it and when you don’t

No one ever said it would be easy.

Hello world! Goodbye Profanity

August 17, 2008

Well, I am going to try this blogging things again!  I am a reluctant ‘social networker,’ but I am trying to get with the program-have patience with me!

The other day I was watching my daugthers ringette game in the arena.  Sitting beside me was a young man chatting on his cell phone.  Quickly I was unsettled by his conversation, F’in this and F’in that. I can’t count the number of times he used that profanity.  Now I am not an angel, but this was ridiculous.  After numerous glances (or were they glares) in his direction, I had just about had enough, I was offended, he did not know or care.  This went on for a good 15 minutes before I finally picked up my stuff and moved.

It made me think about our casual use of profanity, how it makes others feels,  why we feel the need to ‘let it fly,’  if he would speak this way in his workplace, in the presence of his mother or his partner.

Although I am not a big ‘swearer,’  this event brought profanity into the light for me.  The root of the word is profane which means to show disrespect, that sums it up.  It is a bad habit that leaves us looking uneducated, out of control and disrespectful.

I will be trying my best to eradicate even my little bit of potty mouth from now on.
